“I don’t want our home to look like a carnival,” says homeowner Carissa Fox. “I just want something to make us smile wherever we look.”
To me, that’s the essence of a BoHo Home, versus a merely boho home. A boHO HOme is quirky and FUN, and in the living room of the Fox’s Texas home, the key HO-HO elements are super-sized photos of daughters Campbell, 15, and Riley, 12. But don’t overlook the non-traditional side tables–a vintage chest and a tree stump–as well as that cute furry stool and the eclectic mix of ethnic textiles.
Add to that list the unique wall treatment behind those funnin’-it-up photos. On a whim, Carissa drew a leaf pattern with gray paint marker, made her own a poster-board template, and went to town.
I love how everything comes together in this room for a Cali-boho vibe.
Traffic-stopping treatments for high-traffic spots

The kitchen features a 10-foot-long island with metal, industrial-style stools, each in a different bright, fun color. The mix of candy colors continues in accessories, include a red fox wood cutout that’s a nod (and a wink) to the family’s surname.

This high-traffic dining area off the kitchen gets its quirk from the two head vases on the side board, the stripes and chevrons, and the bright blue sideboard with its peeling paint.

The family uses this home office space for schoolwork, computer time and crafts. But what in the decor makes it fun? Notice the sliding barn doors and the grid pattern on the walls DIY-ed by Carissa and husband Todd. It’s simply three-inch-wide plywood strips nailed to the wall in a regular-irregular grid pattern, then painted to match the wall peeking out in-between.
I love how the purple giant alliums pop against all that moody paint and the blue-and-white vase.

Built-in shelves near the stairway hold books, travel treasures, and keepsakes. I love all the vintage boxes and chests, chipped paint and all.
Funnin’ it up upstairs

The unexpected mix of boho and industrial is what catches my eye in the master bedroom. And check out the vintage lamps: Though they match, Carissa found them months apart (how lucky is that?), then painted them a fun cornflower blue.

Daughter Campbell’s room got a fun pop of positive pluses on one wall from a stencil–a safer (and more economical) way to test out a pattern, according to Carissa. The striped rug is made from carpet tiles, another fun touch.
I love how the black accents in this room make it feel sophisticated.

Ditto that sentiment in daughter Riley’s room, where black is paired with lots of fun pink. Riley is also an animal-lover, so her room gets more somethings-to-smile-about from the faux zebra rug bedside and that alpaca at its foot (who must have read the message on the accent pillow).
