Home is Where We Hang Our Hats–Coats, Shawls, Handbags, Hopes & Dreams

As I watched the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia this past week, I couldn’t help but think of how much I valued the sanctity of my own home and my homeland. My heart went out to those in Ukraine who either felt they had to flee theirs or take up arms to defend it.

For a while after we moved to our new house we toyed with the idea of converting the hall coat closet into a pantry and the smaller pantry into a utility closet for the sweeper, carpet cleaner, etc. We added two shelves to it instead, which mostly satisfied our need for more space, and gave up the idea.

However, I had already ordered this made-to-order wall-mounted coat rack to take the place of a coat closet. Although Chris and I still store our coats in the designated closet by the front door, this rack makes a great place for guests to hang coats, handbags or hats.

I planned on posting about this beautiful Etsy find eventually but am choosing to do it now because it’s made by craftsmen in the Ukraine, and I find myself wondering what’s happening to them now.

I love this coat rack so much because it has a practical function but looks like a piece of modern art when not in use, whether the narrower fold-out pieces that serve as hooks are pushed up flat, even with the wider pieces…

…some extended and some lying flat…

…or all extended. I think the shadow created below the rack with all hook panels extended is neat, don’t you?

Guests are always surprised to find this is a coat rack and never fail to comment on its beauty and its uniqueness. They usually play with it a bit, too, before moving on into the kitchen or great room.

Many colors & sizes to choose from

It comes in various sizes–different lengths of one row or multiple rows–as well as different finishes.

I chose the varying wood tones with a few red slats so the rack would tie in with the chimney cupboard my husband built, which we use for extra pantry storage.

The rack’s slatted wood construction also blends well with the primitive artwork that hangs across from it in the foyer.

I eventually want to find a vintage bench to place below the rack and disguise our robotic sweeper a bit. I’m looking for something with clean midcentury modern lines, like the wall rack. An upholstered seat would be great, but beautiful wood would work too. Walnut tones would coordinate well with nearby kitchen cabinets.

A product to treasure, especially now

I ordered our rack Nov. 9, 2021, and was told it would ship about two months later. However, it arrived several weeks early–just before Christmas. I couldn’t have been more pleased!

This is the 79-centimeters-wide (about 30 inches) by 20-centimeters-tall version, and it cost $139.10. Shipping was free.

I had hoped to post how to order this rack in the size you need and the finish you love, but a quick check on Etsy showed the Oom Smart Furniture shop is taking a short break. I’m guessing it’s because of the invasion. I hope the staff and their homes are safe.

In the meantime, follow the link to request an email from their Etsy shop when it reopens. You can also check out Oom’s other products on their website and subscribe to a newsletter.

I hope, with all my heart this business reopens soon with hopes, dreams and homes intact. Ukraine, you are in my prayers!
