The Kantha (KAHN-taa) coverlet continues to gain in popularity because of its bright colors, versatility, vintage look, and global appeal. These thin, quilted coverlets originate in Bangladesh and the eastern states of India, where women have made them for centuries by stitching together layers of old saris and cloth scraps.
Usually there are just two layers of fabric with no batting in between. However, one side is usually made of different fabrics pieced together. It’s this mix that makes each kantha one of a kind, so realize if you see only a folded kantha on a website it could look quite different unfolded. It may also come patched, which is considered desirable.
