My Love Affair with a Chinese Ginger Jar

It’s true: I’ve been in love with this blue-and-white Chinese ginger jar all of my adult life. It’s the first decorative accessory I  bought for my very first apartment, and it still plays a starring role in my home decor.

I just can’t give it up. It didn’t cost much–maybe $20 at an import store–but if it ever broke, my heart would break too. So many other decorative accessories have come and gone in my life, but this little beauty has survived the long haul from post-college boho eclectic to traditional to colonial to modern boho chic.

This particular ginger jar sports double happiness characters and is a traditional Chinese wedding gift, often given in pairs to a bride and groom. I wasn’t married when I bought it, but now that I know its back-story, I like that it reigns over our bedroom from the bonnet of our armoire with my other Asian pottery favs.

Pieces we love should populate the landscape of our home, especially the bedroom, where sleep renews us, dreams inspire us, and love makes us whole. That’s why this Friday I wanted to share with you some charming vignettes anchored by blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, as well as decorative items inspired by them.

Enjoy…

Know why so many of these jars double as vases? The lids have been lost or broken. Photo found on The Pink Pagoda. See more photos of this room here.

These white peonies and blue hydrangeas look extra-fresh in this quartet of coordinating vases. From Ballard Designs‘ blue & white collection, available here.

From blogger Emily A. Clark‘s own collection, which she’s built shopping thrift stores and tag sales. Even the hydrangeas are from her garden! Read and see more photos here.

My own collection includes a covered pot like the one next to the caviar tin.

May I just bring in a folding chaise longue and unwind while gazing on all this?

The pattern on the left is called Floral Garden, while the one on the right is Social Circle. They look antique but are actually new, handpainted, and sold by WisteriaFor me, just looking at all of these has been like reciting a prayer,

as I hope the experience has been for you.

Have a restful, blue-and-white-Chinese-ginger-jar weekend.
