Bold Waves of Pink Make Texas Home Pop

Bold Waves of Pink Make Texas Home Pop - entry

As soon as you enter the Kime home just west of Austin, TX, you instantly know someone who lives here likes pink.

Correction: LOVES pink. And that someone is wife and mom Katie, who’s also a natural at mixing fun and whimsical patterns.

The key to making it all work? “Trust yourself,” says Katie, who owns a home decor store in Austin. “If you like it and your eye says it works, then it does.”

Katie was determined to use the pink rug she bought on a trip to Turkey as the centerpiece in the foyer pictured above, but husband Greg was nearing his pink limit. So she softened the impact with a white console, seagrass wallpaper, and traditional blue-and-white vases.

The blue and pink pairing continues in the dining room.

The living room started with a staid neutral backdrop, but Katie upped the fun ante with boldly striped ottomans, gleaming metal accents and pink pillows. Believe it or not, those are barn doors in the background that separate the master bedroom. Katie added black wood molding, inspired by paneling in the Bergdorf Goodman dining room in New York City.

The drama that starts in those embellished barn doors continues in the first-floor master bedroom, thanks to dark gunmetal gray walls contrasted with a white bed canopy, gleaming gold accents, and preppy stripes.

The busiest room in the house gets a calm white backdrop, with color added in the form of accessories and serveware.

The upstairs hallway is all about the ceiling, so don’t forget to look up! “Wallpapering the ceiling with a print that I designed was a way to incorporate pattern without it feeling in-your-face,” says Katie. “Plus, I wanted to pick up the blue in the vintage kilim runner.” The upholstered chair came from Katie’s store), and the oil painting is an original Katie Kime.

Son Will’s room was designed to function as a kid’s room now but still look appropriate when he’s 18. The jumbo tiger is a much-loved member of Will’s stuffed animal collection.

Katie picked a color scheme that’s young and fun for daughter Ava’s room, too, “but one she’ll still like beyond her next birthday.”

She also designed the wallpaper pattern in Ava’s bathroom. It’s called “Bees Knees,” and she says a large scale is the key to filling an entire room with one pattern. “If those bees were small, it would look dizzying.”

Given the dynamite views, the family’s favorite spot was destined to be the screened-in porch, where they gather for family movie nights.

If they invited me, I’d be walking out with those gorgeous boho poufs!

The Kimes Rollingwood, TX, home, built in the late 1990s, is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Austin. Katie and Greg left the exterior largely as they found it, except for adding the black-and-white-striped sofa and pink pillows–a bold boho hint at what visitors can expect inside.
